Marble Falls softball makes most of summer

One more win. That’s how close the Marble Falls High School softball program came from forcing a play-in contest for the final playoff spot in District 24-4A last season.

That result is firing up the Lady Mustangs, according to head coach Alex Lozoya.

Almost 20 new faces are expected to be part of the program in 2026 after six players graduated.

Lozoya has expressed excitement about the newcomers, particularly since they have shown a lot of natural ability. He has met many of them through his summer camps and by attending contests throughout the city.

To ensure players get the summer work in they want, the program is hosting its skills program in the evening complete with weight lifting sessions. Lozoya has been in attendance for the morning Forge ’25 summer strength-and-conditioning sessions for both the high school and middle school athletes.

But softball is offering an early evening session to remove reasons why the Lady Mustangs can’t attend.

The open skills sessions are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, resuming July 8 after the Marble Falls Independent School District Athletic Department reconvenes Monday, July 7. Right now the department is on a mandatory one-week break issued by the University Interscholastic League.

“Kids have been coming in,” Lozoya said. “Some nights, we have eight kids. Other nights, we have 18. I work with the kids coming in.”

The evening sessions begin at 6 p.m., which allows those with summer jobs to finish their shifts, get to the high school, change and head to the weight room. At about 6:45 p.m., the Lady Mustangs head to the cages for batting drills and to Scearce Baseball Field for skills work. They finish around 8 p.m.

Lozoya said his program is incredibly appreciative of the baseball program and head coach Tyler Porter for sharing their stadium. Currently, work is being done on Scearce Softball Field, home of the Lady Mustangs. That means the facility can not be used for play.

The Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club recently bought the program a second pitching machine, which allows more players to get in more quality work, the coach said.

“Kids are getting reps in,” he said. “We’re excited about the incoming freshmen. They’re getting to mingle with the returners.”

Lozoya, athletic director Keri Timmerman, strength-and-conditioning coordinator Karl “Beef” Bielfeldt and other head coaches echo the same sentiment. They want athletes to enjoy summer camps, family vacations and other activities that re-energize them.

“But if you’re in town, come get your workout in,” Lozoya said. “We want to make sure the kids don’t have the excuses. We are eight to 18 strong. Show up. I’m glad they are taking advantage of it. The more reps you can get, the better.”
